Hi Melissa,
As your gay brother and accidental fan, we share a passion for personal empowerment. I am an Emergency Medicine physician and have written a book titled, WISHES TO DIE FOR. No wait, it’s not about dying wishes. It’s about seeing the end from the beginning and creating wishes by which to live. Not a medical book, it’s a spiritual undertaking written by a wounded child who discovers his inherent potential to become a wound healer and warrior. I was in awe of your commanding presence during a recent interview when you stated having moved beyond being a cancer survivor to becoming a cancer thriver. I perceive you as being like Xena: Warrior Princess, portraying the type of heroism and message in my book.
Melissa, you boldly exhibit being gay as divine intelligence; affirm feminism through creative potential and rock illness with beauty. As you command respect, I am seeking your experience and insight through reviewing my book. Consider me as having earnestness similar to Rachel Maddow when she asks every person she interviews the eternal question, “Did I get it right?” “I would ask you, “Is the information I present in the book pertinent to a thriver?” Before the release of my book, I wish to gain your perspective on the effectiveness and compassion of my message being music to the ears of your ardent fans who might also find themselves suddenly thrust into life-threatening or end-of-life situations.
Most of us hope to leave this life with the belief that we got it right. If I am to help others in the decision-making capacity regarding personal wellbeing and dignity, I need to be a physician who is willing to open myself up to others and receive feedback. As an accidental fan, I loved your music long before I ever put a face and personality to the lyrics I found myself singing while driving. Similar to being involved in a car accident or disruption in life, what occurs as accidental evolves into necessarily putting the pieces together in order to create awareness and understanding.
The vital connection between celebrity and fan, doctor and patient and life and death might be accidental or purposeful. Like you, I strive to make the interpersonal connection real, purposeful and passionate. Ascribing your image and comments to my book of wishes comes with wishful thinking and personal reflection – my wish to die for is to be like Melissa Etheridge. I anticipate attending your upcoming December concert in Arizona. Perhaps I might personally be allowed to hand you a copy of the manuscript, WISHES TO DIE FOR, at that time. I appreciate your heartfelt consideration and response in support of my efforts.
Best wishes,
Kevin Haselhorst (Dr. H)
